Starting January 1, 2020, the program will no longer cover any out of country (OOC) emergency care. This includes hospital room, doctor’s fees and treatments. Only Ontarians needing dialysis treatment will have coverage under a new program.

We don’t expect any increases to premiums due to this legislative change.

What your employees need to know

  • It’s important for Ontarians to ensure they have out-of-country coverage. This can happen through their workplace plan or private travel medical insurance.
  • The OOC Traveller’s Program will only cover an Ontarian’s medical emergency services until December 31, 2019 at midnight. Any medical emergency services costs after that point will be the responsibility of the Ontarian, or their insurance company.
  • Allianz is our partner for medical emergencies outside Canada. For those with out-of-country emergency coverage, Allianz won’t change their handling of medical emergencies.

Plan members must carry their Sun Life Travel card when leaving Canada

You can find this card on the my Sun Life mobile app. It will reflect the:

  • Member ID
  • Contract Number
  • 24/7 emergency phone numbers

If your plan has travel coverage with Sun Life please share the attached announcement with your members.
