Michael Van Alphen

Michael Van Alphen is Senior Vice-President, Group Retirement Services (GRS). He is responsible for leading Canada’s largest provider of workplace savings and retirement platforms. Under Michael’s strategic leadership, Group Retirement Services is responsible for developing and delivering a wide range of retirement income products and services to meet the diverse and evolving needs of Sun Life’s plan sponsors and plan members.

Group Retirement Services covers 1.7 million Canadians and over $174 billion in assets. Guided by Sun Life’s Purpose of helping Canadians achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives, the team delivers innovative solutions and services that help Canadians grow their workplace savings, navigate important life milestones and retire with confidence.

Since joining Sun Life in 2001, Michael has held progressively senior leadership roles in Sun Life Canada, supporting GRS, Sun Life Global Investments, Canadian Finance and Retail Advice & Solutions. Most recently, as Vice-President of Insurance Solutions, Michael led the end-to-end insurance portfolio strategy and execution to deliver an industry leading portfolio of innovative solutions driven by Client needs with strong enablement and integration across our distribution channels. With more than 24 years of industry experience, Michael is a highly respected people leader and trusted partner known for building strong, diverse teams and developing future-ready talent.

Michael is a Chartered Professional Accountant and holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.  Outside of work, Michael enjoys being active with his three children, playing sports, board games or enjoying a movie night together.
