Taking steps towards a menopause-inclusive workplace

July 18, 2024

There has been a 14% drop in working women in Canada between the ages of 45 and 59. As a result, an estimated $3.5 billion is lost due to unmanaged menopause symptoms. This includes $3.3 billion in lost income due to a reduction of hours/leaves and $237M lost in productivity. For a small business, this means fewer employees in the workplace and lost income.

In our ongoing support for the Menopause Foundation of Canada (MFC) we’re happy to share their new report, Menopause and Nursing in Canada, created in partnership with the BC Nurses Union. Last year, we shared MFC’s report, Menopause and Work in Canada as a part of the Menopause Works Here campaign. We also shared the Menopause Inclusive playbook for employers. Although focused on nursing, this report builds on our previous research to create awareness about the effects of menopause. Many nurses are in the perimenopausal corridor where supports are needed. The research provides insights on menopause education at work and the value in improving benefits plans.

Why this matters to a small business

When you’re a smaller business, your close-knit group of employees feels like family. Which is why taking care of their needs can help your business thrive. You can help close the menopause-related health gap at your workplace with better supports to retain your most valuable segment. You can start with:

  • Leveraging existing plan resources and encouraging communication with employees.
  • Adding or increasing coverage for menopause treatments and therapies.
  • Providing flexible work arrangements to better manage symptoms.
  • Sharing toolkits for education and awareness for leadership.
  • Creating menopause-specific resources such as workshops, mentors or support groups.
  • Educating leadership and departments to de-stigmatize menopause-related conversations.
