Re-opening of Beutel Goodman Canadian Equity Fund on the Core investment platform

June 09, 2025

Plan sponsors may wish to consider whether this investment news has any implications for the investment options available within their plans. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada purchases units of the fund listed below, which is established as a segregated fund in accordance with the Insurance Companies Act (Canada).

Plan sponsors don’t need to take any immediate action as a result of this update. If you already offer the Beutel Goodman Canadian Equity Segregated Fund in your plan, there is no impact to you.

On May 1, 2025, the Beutel Goodman Canadian Equity Segregated Fund (the Fund) is available to plan sponsors who don’t already offer it in their line-ups. Beutel Goodman & Company Ltd. (Beutel Goodman) had closed the Fund to new clients in order to control capacity in 2001 and has since reopened it.

About the Fund

The Fund’s objective is to maximize portfolio returns through capital enhancement and investment income. It seeks long-term capital appreciation primarily through investments in common shares and other equity securities of established Canadian issuers. The benchmark for the Fund is the S&P/TSX Composite Index.

The Fund includes an allocation to Canadian small capitalization issuers.  This is the main difference between the Fund and the other similar offering on our platform (Beutel Goodman Fundamental Canadian Equity Segregated Fund) as the Fundamental fund only invests in large capitalization stocks. Having both options on our platform provides plan sponsors with more choice.

Background

Beutel Goodman decided to close the Fund to new clients in 2011 to manage capacity. This didn’t affect plan sponsors who were offering the Fund, and contributions continued within these plans. Beutel Goodman has recently re-opened the Fund to new clients.

It’s important to note that GRS’ investment governance activities for the Fund have continued without interruption.

Do you have to take any action?

You don’t need to take any action. You may consider whether the Fund would be a suitable addition to your lineup.
