Re-addition of the MFS Balanced Value Segregated Fund on the Core investment platform

August 11, 2025

Plan sponsors may wish to consider whether this investment news has any implications for the investment options available within their plans. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada purchases units of the fund listed below, which is established as a segregated fund in accordance with the Insurance Companies Act (Canada).

Plan sponsors don’t need to take any immediate action as a result of this update. If you already offer the MFS Balanced Value Segregated Fund in your plan, then this update doesn’t affect you.

On August 1, 2025, Sun Life made the MFS Balanced Value Segregated Fund (the Fund) available again for plan sponsors to add to their fund line-ups. Sun Life previously stopped marketing the Fund to clients in May 2022, in order to streamline the balanced fund offering on Sun Life’s Core investment platform. Since then, some plan sponsors, consultants and plan advisors have requested access to this fund.

About the Fund

The Fund’s objective is to provide a superior real rate of return through both income and capital appreciation by investing in a diversified portfolio of equity and fixed income assets. The fund follows a Value style for its equity components. A key factor in MFS’s selection of securities is being able to identify a catalyst for price appreciation. The benchmark for the Fund is as follows: 5% FTSE Canada 91-Day T-Bill Index, 35% FTSE Canada Universe Bond Index, 30% S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index, and 30% MSCI World (Net).

The allowable asset mix ranges are as follows: Equities 45-75% (Canadian: 15-45%, Foreign: 15-45%), fixed income 20-50% and cash 0-20%.

It’s important to note that GRS’ investment governance activities for the Fund have continued without interruption.

Do you have to take any action?

You don’t need to take any action. You may consider whether the Fund would be a suitable addition to your lineup.
