Change to use of SIN identifiers

The use of a plan member’s social insurance number (SIN) as their account number or plan member ID is being discontinued.
Throughout 2026 and 2027, Group Retirement Services (GRS) will work with plan sponsors to update these numbers to remove SIN identifiers:
- This change is specific to member IDs that include four or more consecutive digits from a plan member’s SIN.
- It aligns with Sun Life’s commitment to protecting personal information and recommendations from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
- These updates will be managed by a dedicated Key Change team with support from GRS Operations.
If this change affects your plan, you’ll receive an email from either the Key Change Team (keychangeteam@sunlife.com) or your GRS Operations contact. This email will include more detail on next steps.
