The details you need to know

Your eligibility

  • You are between 18 and 69 and legally living in Canada.
  • If you don’t provide accurate information when you apply, Sun Life could cancel your insurance or deny your claim.

Renewing your policy

  • Payments always stay the same for the length of the term.
  • When your policy automatically renews, your monthly payments will increase. This is because you’ll be 10 or 20 years older.
  • Automatic renewals are for the same term length.
  • You don’t have to answer any health questions.
  • We’ll notify you of the renewal at least 30 days in advance.

Will I need to take medical exams?

  • If you’re healthy and age 40 or under, you can skip medical exams.
  • If you're healthy and between the age of 41-50, you can skip medical exams if you're applying for coverage up to $500,000.

There are some exceptions to the above. A medical exam is required if:

  • The applicant answers “yes” to any of the health questions, or
  • Specific information is found in the applicant’s Medical Information Bureau record.

Exclusions and limitations

  • If you take your own life within two years of the date your policy takes effect, we won’t pay the claim. But we will refund all monthly payments paid up to then, minus any administration fees.

Certificate of Temporary Insurance sample

This benefit is offered on Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada life insurance products and is a non-contractual arrangement that we may approve at our discretion on a case-by-case basis. If an insured person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, an application can be made by the policy owner for a lump sum advance of 50% of the insurance amount, to a maximum of $100,000. The lump sum, plus interest, is deducted from the death benefit when paid. This benefit follows the rules of the living benefit program in effect when the policy owner applies to receive the benefit.

The person making the claim must do so as soon as reasonably possible after the person covered by the policy passes away. To make a claim:

  1. Call us at 1-800-669-7921. This number is also listed at the beginning of the insured person’s policy. We’ll send you a form to complete.
  2. Fill out the form and mail it to us at the address listed on the form. Be sure to include any information we ask for to assess the claim. This will include proof that the insured person passed away while the policy was in effect.
Some things to keep in mind:
  • Doctors may charge a fee to fill out certain forms. The person making the claim is responsible for covering any fees.
  • After we receive all the information we need, we’ll assess the claim within 5 business days.

After receiving proof required, within 30 business days we'll assess the claim and if approved, we'll pay the claim.
