What is a Super Visa?

A super visa is a temporary visa given to parents and grandparents of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. People with a super visa are allowed to come to Canada as a visitor and stay for up to five years without renewing their status. Parents and grandparents with super visas can also apply for an extension if they want to stay in Canada for a longer time.

The Government of Canada has a few eligibility requirements for those who apply for a super visa. One of them states that your parents or grandparents must have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that’s valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada. Having super visa insurance meets this requirement.

What is super visa insurance?

Super visa insurance is a type of travel medical insurance plan that you can purchase for your parents or grandparents when they apply for a super visa. This type of insurance helps pay for unexpected medical and dental costs that family members (with super visas) may experience when they come to Canada.

What does super visa insurance cover?

Super visa insurance can cover your parents and grandparents for expenses like emergency hospital and medical bills, as well as:

  • Out-of-pocket expenses, such as accommodations and meals, child-care costs, essential telephone calls and taxi fares
  • Emergency and accidental dental bills
  • Chiropractor and osteopath services
  • Podiatrist (foot doctor) services
  • Physiotherapy services, and
  • Acupuncture services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical insurance required to get a super visa?

Yes.

How much health insurance does a super visa holder need?

Your parents or grandparents will need at least $100,000 in health insurance coverage when they apply for a super visa. This is a requirement from the Government of Canada for all super visa applicants.

Does super visa insurance include dental?

Yes. Depending on your policy, your parents or grandparents will receive a set amount of coverage for emergency dental bills and accidental dental bills.

Accidental dental refers to dental care that a person may need due to an accident (such as a car accident). Emergency dental refers to dental care that’s needed for typical dental-related issues (such as toothaches).

Does super visa insurance include vision care?

Coverage for vision care is not included with super visa insurance.

Will my parents or grandparents still have coverage if they leave the country and return to Canada?

Yes, super visa insurance covers health-care costs incurred when they travel outside of Canada, as long as they spend the majority of their coverage period in Canada. However, please note that they aren’t covered for any health-care costs they incur when visiting their country of origin or residence.

For example, let’s say your parents are from France. With super visa insurance, your parents can submit health-care claims during their time in Canada and whenever they travel to other countries apart from France.

What if my parents or grandparents die while they’re in Canada?

With super visa insurance, you’ll receive coverage for the cost of returning your loved one back to their country of origin. Funeral expenses, however, are not covered with super visa insurance.

Do I get a refund if my parents or grandparents are denied a super visa?

Yes, if your parents or grandparents are not granted a super visa, then you can get a refund if you request it before the policy becomes active. Please note that an administration fee will be subtracted from your refund.

If you cancel your policy for any other reason apart from a visa application refusal, then you’re still eligible for a refund, but you’ll be subject to a larger administration fee.
