What’s the Respiratory Care Program?

The Respiratory Care Program offers online access to pharmacists trained in respiratory care. You’ll get 1-on-1 support, regular check-ins and a Personal Take Home Summary – at no cost to you. This program is for people living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Respiratory Care Program services are offered through the Online Pharmacy, by Pillway. When you enrol, you’ll also get access to all the benefits of the online pharmacy services at no cost, including online prescription refills, pharmacist support and free medication delivery. Medication costs and coverage depends on your benefits plan.

Available to all Canadians, except those in Quebec.

Access comprehensive asthma and COPD care – What’s included:

Professional respiratory assessments

  • Timely in-depth assessments, medication reviews and side effect management. 
  • 1-on-1 virtual consultations including Asthma Control Tests (ACTs), COPD Assessment Tests (CATs) and health condition reviews. 
  • An evaluation of your risk status to determine the best possible therapy for you. 
  • Results are reviewed and used to build your tailored care program.

Personalized take home summary

  • Get a comprehensive Asthma/COPD summary to help manage your medication dosage and identify triggers. 
  • Book consultations to learn effective inhaler device techniques, guidelines and manage side effects. 
  • Monitor your progress, symptoms and refine your Asthma/COPD management with follow-up appointments with your pharmacist. 
  • Get advice and resources on how vaccinations, sleep routines, allergies and other related issues impact your respiratory system.

Pharmacists with training in respiratory care

  • Meet your support team of licensed pharmacists that are trained in asthma and COPD care.
  • Pharmacists are an important member of your care team. They’ll help you understand your assessments, current medications and side effects. Plus, they can share medication updates and recommendations with your Primary Care Provider, with your permission.
  • Your pharmacist can also help direct you to other online care programs and support through your community. For example, they may direct you to associations for resources, and programs led by respiratory therapists or other experts in asthma and COPD.

Getting started is easy, and at no cost!

1. Sign in or register for Online Pharmacy by Pillway

  • Registering is easy and only takes a few minutes. 
  • You’ll need to provide your name, contact information and drug card.

2. Book your 30-minute consultation

  • Through the “Pharmacist consultation” section of the platform, choose Asthma/COPD. 
  • Complete the short consultation form. 
  • Pick a date and time that work for you.

3. Get the ongoing support you need

  • Attend your consult and start your personalized program with pharmacist check-ins when you need them (often after 2, 8 and 24 weeks).
  • Reach out to your pharmacist for support and questions, anytime.

What’s the Online Pharmacy, by Pillway?

The Online Pharmacy is a pharmacy platform that offers an easy way to get your medications without having to go to the store. It also offers care programs, like the Respiratory Care Program, Diabetes Care Program and Can Quit Program, for ongoing support.

  • Easily fill and refill prescriptions.
  • Get connected care. Pharmacists can contact your Primary Care Provider should there be any changes to your health status or medication needs.

Frequently asked questions

The Respiratory Care Program is offered to Canadian residents aged 5 and up. Services aren’t available to Quebec residents.

When enrolling in the program, the form requests your Primary Care Provider's information. With your consent, your support team will keep your Primary Care Provider informed.

Your program support team may make recommendations, however, it will generally be your Primary Care Provider that will adjust your medications, as necessary. If you don't have a Primary Care Provider, the pharmacists will still make recommendations for you.

Clients without a Primary Care Provider are still eligible for the Sun Life Respiratory Care program. 

No, using the Online Pharmacy, by Pillway to fill your prescriptions is completely optional. We recommend using it for a more convenient and connected healthcare experience.
