Canadian residents between the age of 18 and 69 can apply for Simplified Term Life Insurance. You’ll need to answer three simple questions about your health that relate to:

  • Your health over the last five years.
  • Medical tests or referrals that you haven’t completed yet or where you’re awaiting results.*
  • 48 or more consecutive hours you spent in an emergency room or hospital in the last three years.*

If you don’t provide accurate information when you apply, your insurance could be cancelled, or claims denied.

* Exceptions apply.

How much coverage can I get?

You can apply for different coverage amounts such as $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000. All the coverage amounts are eligible for a 10-year term only.  Speak to an advisor to determine how much coverage is right for you.

What is not covered under Simplified Term life insurance?

We won’t pay benefits if:

  1. You take your own life for the first two years. This is regardless of whether you have a mental illness or understand or intend the consequences of your action(s). We’ll refund all monthly payments you’ve made, minus any administration fees.

  2. Within the first 90 days, you:
  • could not perform your usual activities or occupation for more than two weeks because of illness or injury,
  • have or had any signs or symptoms associated with cancer within the last 12 months,
  • had suffered a stroke or a heart attack within the last 12 months, or
  • in the last 45 days, you had to stay in a hospital, nursing home, sanitarium, psychiatric facility, or any other health-related facility.

If you apply for Sun Life Go Simplified Term Life Insurance more than once, we’ll cover you for up to $100,000 in total.

Are there any exclusions and limitations for coverage?

In the first two years your policy takes effect, we won’t pay the claim if you take your own life. This is regardless of whether you have a mental illness or understand or intend the consequences of your action(s). We’ll refund all monthly payments you’ve made, minus any administration fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

The more information you provide about yourself, the less you typically pay for life insurance. You only have to answer three health questions to apply for Sun Life Go Simplified Term Life. That means this type of insurance typically costs more than life insurance that requires more health information from you. If you’re in good health, consider applying for another term life insurance product where you'll give more health information. An advisor can help.

We guarantee that your monthly payments will stay the same for the first 10 years. After that, the policy will renew each year. As a result, the monthly payments will increase each year, based on your age. But we won’t ask you any additional questions about your health. We’ll notify you of the renewal at least 30 days in advance.

Temporary coverage is insurance that covers you from the date you submit your application for insurance and provide payment information, until the earliest one of the following occurs:

  1. the date the insurance applied for starts,
  2. the date we tell you that your application for insurance is declined,
  3. 30 days after we asked for more information to underwrite your application and did not receive your response,
  4. 90 days after you submit your application for insurance,
  5. the date you ask us in writing to cancel your application for insurance,
  6. the date you decline our offer of insurance or,
  7. the date we pay the death benefit.

If you die before we let you know of our decision on your application, we'll still pay the claim. It will be equal to the amount of life insurance you applied for. A decision to accept or decline your application may take up to 90 days.

If you are under age 69, the total amount of any death benefit payable under any Sun Life Go life insurance policies is the lesser of $1,000,000 or the total amount of any death benefit applied for under this application.

Sample Certificate of Temporary Insurance

This benefit is offered on Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada life insurance products and is a non-contractual arrangement that we may approve at our discretion on a case-by-case basis. If an insured person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, an application can be made by the policy owner for a lump sum advance of 50% of the insurance amount, to a maximum of $100,000. The lump sum, plus interest, is deducted from the death benefit when paid. This benefit follows the rules of the living benefit program in effect when the policy owner applies to receive the benefit.

The person making the claim must do so as soon as reasonably possible after the person covered by the policy passes away. To make a claim:

  1. Call us at 1-800-669-7921 as soon as reasonably possible. This number is also listed at the beginning of the insured person’s policy. We’ll send you a form to complete.
  2. Fill out the form and mail it to us at the address listed on the form. Be sure to include any information we ask for to assess the claim. This will include proof that the insured person passed away while the policy was in effect.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Doctors may charge a fee to fill out certain forms. The person making the claim is responsible for covering any fees.
  • After receiving proof required, within 30 business days we'll assess the claim and if approved, we'll pay the claim.
