Health benefits after you leave your job

If you're leaving a group benefits plan that provided you with health benefits, you can apply for Health Coverage Choice.

You need to apply within 60 days of leaving your group benefits plan. Any family members who were also covered under your group benefits plan can be included on the application if they are age 74 or younger. The application will not ask you for any medical requirements, but each applicant must have provincial healthcare coverage in place.


We offer 3 Health Coverage Choice plans:

Health and Dental Choice A

This plan has core prescription drug coverage and no emergency travel medical coverage.

  • 80% reimbursement for prescription drugs  with $400 annual maximum
  • 80% reimbursement for preventive dental care with $700 annual maximum
  • 80% reimbursement for supplemental healthcare. 80% reimbursement up to $25 per visit for paramedical practitioner services up to maximum $250 per year per practitioner
  • Vision care and semi-private hospital room coverage included
  • Combined $250,000 lifetime maximum for all benefits, excluding dental

Health Choice B

This plan has a higher prescription drug maximum than Health and Dental Choice A, and includes emergency travel medical coverage.

  • 80% reimbursement for prescription drugs with $1,000 annual maximum
  • Optional dental care coverage includes preventive (80% reimbursement) and restorative (50% reimbursement)
  • 100% reimbursement for supplemental healthcare. 100% reimbursement for paramedical practitioner services up to maximum $300 per year, per practitioner and a combined maximum of $500 per calendar year
  • Vision care and semi-private hospital room coverage included
  • Combined $250,000 lifetime maximum for all benefits excluding dental and emergency travel medical

Health Choice C

This plan has the highest drug maximum and includes emergency travel medical coverage.

  • 80% reimbursement for prescription drugs with $2,000 annual maximum
  • Optional dental care coverage includes preventive (80% reimbursement) and restorative (50% reimbursement) 
  • 100% reimbursement for supplemental healthcare. 100% reimbursement for paramedical practitioner services up to maximum $300 per year per, per practitioner and a combined maximum of $500 per calendar year
  • Vision care and semi-private hospital room coverage included
  • Combined $250,000 lifetime maximum for all benefits excluding dental and emergency travel medical
