To help improve your oral health, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps cover a portion of the cost of a range of oral health care services, but it may not cover all the costs or services recommended by your provider.
- Exams, including complete, routine, specific and emergency exams
- X-rays
- Scaling (professional cleaning); fluoride application and sealants
- Fillings and most standard root canal treatments
- Standard complete dentures and repairs and adjustments to existing dentures
- Some oral surgeries, including extractions
- Minimal sedation
Some services that are recommended by your provider will need to be pre-approved to confirm they will be covered by the plan before the treatment is received.
Not all services requested will be approved for coverage. You should confirm that these services will be covered by the plan before deciding to receive treatment.
- Complete specialist examinations
- Crowns
- Removable partial dentures
- Overdentures and immediate dentures
- Moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia
- Orthodontic services: These are not available yet. A specific range of orthodontic services will be available in the future, at a date to be determined.
There are a number of services not covered by the CDCP such as implants, and implant-related procedures, veneers and mouth guards.
For a full list of services covered and any limitations and exclusions, consult the CDCP Dental Benefits Guide.
In the event of a discrepancy between this brochure and the Canadian Dental Care Plan - Dental Benefits Guide (Guide), the Guide takes precedence.
- Know your coverage start date and the percentage of CDCP covered fees.
- Make sure your coverage start date is in effect at the time of your appointment.
- Ask your provider if they accept billing Sun Life directly for payment. If they do not, you will not be able to be reimbursed by Sun Life if you pay upfront.
You are responsible for:
- Making sure your CDCP coverage is active at each appointment and before receiving care.
- Submitting a renewal application annually, to confirm that you still meet the eligibility requirements.
- Contacting Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342 for updates to your personal information.
Oral health providers that can bill the CDCP include dentists, dental hygienists, denturists, dental specialists, dental schools, and other educational institutions for oral health professions.
You can find an oral health provider by:
- Contacting any oral health provider, dental school, and other educational institutions for oral health professions in your community and asking if they accept CDCP clients and agree to bill and can receive payment directly from Sun Life for CDCP services.
- Visiting the Sun Life CDCP website and using the CDCP Provider Search Tool to search for a participating provider by name, specialty, or location (not all providers participating in the CDCP are listed in the search tool).
- Calling Sun Life's CDCP Contact Centre at 1-888-888-8110 for help finding a provider near you.
- Present your member ID, a piece of identification, and your coverage start date.
- Know that your personal information and health history will be collected by your provider.
- Discuss any concerns you have about your teeth or mouth.
- Talk about care, treatment options, and potential costs you may have to pay yourself with your provider. The CDCP may not cover all the costs or services recommended by your provider.
- Decide what services to receive.
- The CDCP may not cover the full cost of the treatment, or all services recommended by your provider. Ask your provider about any treatment or costs not covered by the CDCP before accepting care.
- Oral health providers treating CDCP members are required to submit claims directly to Sun Life. The CDCP pays oral health providers directly for the portion of the services covered by the plan. You should not pay upfront for the CDCP covered portion – as you will not be reimbursed by the plan.
- The CDCP covered fees may be different than the fees charged by the provider. You are responsible for paying any amounts not covered by the plan, in addition to your co-payment percentage, as applicable. This is true even if the percentage the plan pays is 100%.
Have your member ID ready when you call.
