Important information on investments and supporting members

We’re saddened by the devastating situation and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the surrounding regions. We stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian community globally.

We also recognize that you and your members may have concerns about how this might impact member’ investments. We’ve provided some information to help keep you updated on the investments in your group plan and member behaviour.  As well, we’ve included links to resources that are available to support you and your employees.

Our GRS Investment Solutions professionals provide a valuable perspective on the investment platform, manager and fund monitoring and evaluation. During times of uncertainty, their expertise is critical in providing ongoing analysis of the investment managers and funds available on our core investment platform.

Given Russia is not part of most developed market indices, most managers and funds on our platform have no exposure to Russia. On the other hand, some funds, like emerging market equities and global fixed income, may have small exposures.

Most target date, target risk and balanced funds on our core platform are well-diversified and have 0% or very minimal exposure to Russian holdings.

Our GRS Investment Solutions team are engaged in conversations to understand what actions managers with exposures are taking and we will keep you informed of updates.

There are significant impacts to energy prices, economic growth and inflation for some time to come. Active investment managers will have to navigate many complex issues that reach far beyond Russia.

Our team in Group Retirement Services continues to monitor the situation abroad and how it is impacting member behaviour. Our most recent Market Volatility report shows that members are continuing to stay the course with their investments.

Our call centre has not seen any increase in members calling to ask about exposures to Russia, or to divest their holdings. When asked, the staff continue to convey  the importance of staying the course, discuss  the benefits of a group plan and professionally-managed funds,  assure members of the minimal exposures to Russia of most funds and explain that this crisis could have much bigger results going forward on the global economy and markets.

We will continue to monitor the investment behaviour of members and will share important updates as they become available.

Your members have received an email from Sun Life regarding the crisis in Ukraine. This email provided information as it relates to market volatility and group plans.

Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. And to support those impacted by this humanitarian crisis, Sun Life is expanding its commitment towards Ukraine humanitarian and resettlement efforts, with an additional $200,000 donated to the Canadian Red Cross and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Donations will now total over $1.1 million.

In addition, we’re also offering individual mental health support for Canadians who are in need during these difficult times. That’s why for the next few months, Sun Life Health and Dialogue are offering free self-guided therapy to all Canadians. Canadians will be able to access self-care toolkits and resources for free through the Lumino Health Virtual Care app, powered by Dialogue. If they don’t have access to Lumino Health Virtual Care, they’ll be able to access support through the Dialogue app. Click here for more details.
