We’re experiencing some service delays with in-force illustrations. Our usual response time is 5 business days. However, we are currently averaging 11 business days and potentially up to 28 days to complete requests. Universal Life products represent 65% of the volume in the backlog.

Changes to 2018 tax reporting for policy loan interestWe have launched a review of our tax reporting practices. As part of this initiative, we will no longer be reporting amounts from policy loan interest. This means some Clients will not receive a T5 or R3 slip going forward, and they will not need to include this amount in their taxable income. Others may receive a tax slip for a smaller amount than they may have been expecting

APS required for all clients over age 70

Clients over age 70 are more likely to have medical histories that affect our underwriting assessment. These histories are often complex and require information not directly available from the client. An Attending Physician Statement (APS) from the client’s physician is required to accurately assess the medical history. As a result, we’re updating our APS guidelines to require an APS for all clients over age 70.

New client consent form for collecting favourable genetic test results

The Genetic Non-Discrimination Act came into effect on May 4, 2017. It’s important that you understand how this Act affects your business. Anyone in breach of the law could face a prison term up to 5 years and a fine up to $1,000,000. Refer to the NewsFlash communication of May 5 for more details. Although the Act prohibits anyone from requiring a client to undergo a genetic test or requesting test results, we can confirm that a process is now in place that allows you to collect favourable genetic test results with the client’s consent.

MediFast agreement closure, and APS service website change

As of January 1, 2018, Dynacare, Hooper Holmes and ExamOne will be our only providers for paramedical services and you'll no longer be able to place orders with MediFast. MediFast will try to complete services ordered prior to January 1 by January 31, 2018, but any services not completed by January 31 will be referred to one of our other approved paramedical providers.

Fillable PDFs now available for some underwriting forms

Fillable PDF versions of underwriting evidence forms E4 (Aviation questionnaire) and E24 (Underwater diving questionnaire) are now available on Updates to the questions on these forms have also been made. The changes make the form faster and easier to complete, and will reduce the underwriting review time.
