Stratford Festival HD brings Shakespeare to a screen near you

Does time, distance or budget keep you from enjoying Ontario’s Stratford Festival? Check out Stratford Festival HD, the best of the Bard on movie screens across Canada.

From a controversial battle of the sexes, to the most famous question in all of drama, to a late-career Shakespearean gem, the 2015 season of Ontario's Stratford Festival had something for everyone. Didn't get to see any of it? Now, thanks to Stratford Festival HD, presented by Sun Life Financial, you can.

This spring, Cineplex theatres across Canada will present directed-for-the-screen, high-definition versions of three hit 2015 productions:

  • The Taming of the Shrew: Saturday, March 12 and Thursday, March 17
  • Hamlet: Saturday, April 23 (which is Shakespeare's birthday and the 400th anniversary of his death), and Thursday, April 28
  • The Adventures of Pericles: Saturday, May 7, and Thursday, May 12

The Saturday matinees are at 12:55 p.m. and the Thursday-night screenings at 7 p.m.

The films are part of an initiative by the festival to capture all of Shakespeare's plays over 10 years, creating the first North American video collection of the complete works of Shakespeare.

"These Cineplex screenings are an excellent way for people who can't get to Stratford to see the festival's work," says the festival's Executive Director, Anita Gaffney.

"Our commitment to bringing the best on-stage performances to the big screen continues with a new season of the Stratford Festival's film series," said Brad LaDouceur, Vice-President, Event Cinema, Cineplex Entertainment. "As a proudly Canadian company, we're excited that audiences from coast to coast will have the opportunity to see and experience some of the best theatre productions our country has to offer."
