Connor Clark & Lunn succession planning update

September 4, 2012

Plan sponsors may wish to consider whether this investment update has any implications for the investment options available within their plans.

Connor, Clark & Lunn (CC&L) has provided further details on the succession plan for the key leadership role in the organization, which was initially announced in the first quarter of 2011. Larry Lunn has been the managing partner of the firm since its inception in 1982. Over the past decade, CC&L has transformed the way its business is organized and successfully transitioned the leadership of each of its four teams (fundamental equity, quantitative equity, fixed income and client solutions). As a result, leadership of the firm is now largely in the hands of a second generation of partners. Work is well underway to incorporate a third generation of partners into the leadership development process to ensure there is a clear path to sustaining CC&L's independence for the long term.

In the first quarter of 2013, Mr. Lunn will step back from the role of managing partner. He will be succeeded by Martin Gerber, who will continue to lead the quantitative equity team.

Also, effective January 2013, Chris Kalbfleisch will succeed Mr. Lunn as leader of CC&L's asset allocation team. The asset mix decision-making process and team members will not change. The team will continue to consist of Chris Kalbfleisch, Larry Lunn, Gary Baker and Steven Huang. Mr. Kalbfleisch's responsibilities on the fixed income team will not change.

Following the transition, Mr. Lunn will not retire from the firm but will take on a more senior statesman function, which CC&L expects will include greater client involvement.

Mr. Lunn is currently the Chairman of Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Ltd., Chairman and President of Connor, Clark & Lunn Investment Management Ltd., Chief Investment Officer and leader of the asset allocation team. Mr. Lunn is responsible for investment policy and setting asset allocation. He also chairs the risk management team.

Mr. Gerber has been a partner at CC&L for 20 years and a director for the past 10 years.  He is the leader of the quantitative equity team, a member of the risk management team and is responsible for derivatives management strategies.

Mr. Kalbfleisch is a partner and vice-president. He has 18 years of investment experience, including the last 10 years with CC&L. He has been a member of the firm's asset allocation team since 2005 and is a member of the fixed income team responsible for quantitative research and analysis.
