Amendments to the Manitoba Insurance Act: Changes to group plan member booklets/plan summaries

March 16, 2015

As a result of recent amendments to the Manitoba Insurance Act, which came into effect on March 1, 2015, we updated a provision within plan member booklets/plan summaries. The new provision pertaining to Rights to copies of documents is only being added to booklets and plan summaries of Sun Life Financial group plans administered under a group annuity policy with members residing in Manitoba.

What’s changing?
As a result of the legislative amendments, plan members living in Manitoba now have a right to receive copies of documents that relate to their group annuity policy upon request to Sun Life Financial. The following clause describing these changes has been updated within impacted plan member booklets under General Information ‘What statements and communications will I receive?’ and under Official Documents in the plan summary:

“In accordance with Applicable Legislation, if you live in Alberta, British Columbia or Manitoba, upon your request Sun Life Financial will provide directly to you a copy of your enrolment form (or other information that was required by Sun Life Financial in order to enrol you in the plan) and the Group Annuity Policy issued by Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada..”

How will this change be communicated to plan members?
Impacted plan members will see a broadcast message on the secure plan member site, mysunlife.ca. Plan sponsors with impacted plan members - either existing plan members or new plan members receiving plan booklets/summaries printed prior to March 1, 2015 – must provide members with an amendment to their booklet/plan summary available for download at this
link.

Background
The Rights to copies of documents provision was previously added to booklets and summaries of plan members residing in Alberta and B.C. in 2012 when both respective provinces made a similar legislative amendment.
