Managing your drug costs to get more value for your drug dollars.

Watch the managing my drug costs video

Do you know that prescription costs are increasing at a rapid rate?

You are fortunate to work for a company that shares the cost of prescriptions with you and your family. But, why would you pay more for your prescription drugs than you need to?

One of our responsibilities at Sun Life is to help you understand the industry changes that may have an impact on your drug plan – and share ways to help you manage drug costs.

3 ways you can be a smart shopper:

3. Ask for a 3-month supply for chronic medications.

Your plan allows pharmacists to dispense drugs for chronic or lifelong conditions in a 90-day or 3-month supply for a single dispensing fee. This results in fewer visits to the pharmacist and lower dispensing fee costs.

Talk to your pharmacist about this – it’s a simple way to save!

Help contain your drug plan costs.

1. Buy generic equivalent drugs whenever possible.

Always ask your doctor or pharmacist whether there are generic equivalents for any brand name drug you currently take.

What exactly are generic drugs?
Generic drugs are clinically identical versions of their counterpart brand name drugs, with the same active ingredients. There is no difference in the quality, purity, effectiveness or safety, so your level of treatment is fully maintained with a generic drug. Look to your doctor or pharmacist as your best resources for keeping you informed about generic equivalents of any brand name drugs you take.

Help contain your drug plan costs.

2. Shop around for the best dispensing fee.

A dispensing fee is the amount pharmacists charge to help cover their services when they fill prescriptions – and these fees vary widely.

Learning how to ‘shop smart’ now will help you avoid future extra out-of-pocket costs and help protect your plan’s affordability.

Going Green - Tips

Environmentally responsible tips

The home office:

Computer - Make sure the energy saving feature is activated on your computer, so it can power down if inactive.

The Garage:

Alternative Fuel Vehicles - Did you know that alternative fuel vehicles might be eligible for a tax rebate or credit? Some insurers may offer lower automobile insurance rates.

The Kitchen:

Refrigerator - Save energy by setting the refrigerator no lower than between 1.7 degrees celsius and 3.3 degrees celsius, and the freezer at -18ºC.

The Laundry Room:

Front-loading washers use about 40 percent less water per load and 50 percent less energy than top-loading washers. Front-loading machines also use less detergent.

The Driveway:

Take Back Programs - Reduce your environmental impact with Take Back programs at participating retailers. These programs allow to return products for eco-friendly disposal.

More suggestions:

Replace regular light bulbs with halogen, or, even better, compact fluorescent bulbs.
