We are delighted to announce a new referral agreement with Mental Health Innovations Consulting (MHI) that gives you access to this leading mental health workplace practice.

What is peer support?

A workplace peer support program is based on people connecting who have a shared experience with mental health issues as a means to complement more traditional mental health care programs.  Face-to-face interaction with a co-worker who has lived with similar problems can be very effective in helping overcome the stigmas related to mental illness – and in helping promote mental health in the workplace.

About Mental Health Innovations (MHI)

Mental Health Innovations Consulting (MHI) is a national bilingual consulting service that assists organizations in setting up sustainable peer-based, non-clinical mental health programs. MHI was founded by retired Lieutenant-Colonel Stéphane Grenier, who served in Rwanda in General Romeo Dallaire’s United Nations Headquarters (HQ) team and upon return established a peer support program for the Canadian Forces.   MHI is proud of its ability to assist organizations throughout the initiation, implementation and evaluation of peer support programs that balance rigour and accountability while ensuring that corporate priorities remain relevant and credible for employees and employers alike.

“I am thrilled that Sun Life is leading the way in bringing peer support to Canadian employers through our work with Stéphane Grenier and Mental Health Innovations,” says Dr Marie-Hélène Pelletier, our Director of Workplace Mental Health. “Peer support is a recognized way to help employers provide a psychologically healthy workplace and is one of the recommendations made by the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety.”

“It is a practical, impactful, and achievable process that is well aligned with Sun Life’s commitment to innovation and improving workplace mental health. Sun Life is the first insurance carrier to bring peer support to employers, and it exemplifies our commitment to prevention and to bringing back the ‘humanness’ in mental health in the workplace.

“Having a peer support program in an organization can be extremely beneficial to both the employer and employees, and ultimately the bottom line.”
