2014 Mobile Overview 

Digital technology is increasingly becoming an integral part of the plan member experience and Canadians have the same expectations about their mobile experiences from their group benefits provider as they do from any service provider: fast, easy, comprehensive and meaningful.  We get it!

2014 was an exciting year for mobile at Sun Life, with lots of activity to enhance our app and evolve the plan member experience. We are constantly reviewing plan member feedback and looking at ways to add more value.

And plan members are noticing.  We have received over 3,148 ratings at 4.5 stars from app stores, and our app has been downloaded over 350,000 times to date!

2014 achievements in mobile

Acupuncture and osteopath services             Launch date: February 9

Plan members currently enabled for acupuncture and osteopath e-claims online submissions, provided they’re covered for these services under their plan, can now submit these claims through their smartphones using our app.

my Sun Life Mobile Effect contest      Campaign dates: May 11 to June 22

The my Sun Life Mobile Effect video contest inspired submissions of user-generated videos showing how my Sun Life Mobile has made plan members’ lives brighter. Additional random draws were based on plan members signing into the app.

How did we do? The numbers are compelling:

  • Over 9.5 million impressions (potential audience viewing the messaging)
  • Over 1 million e-mails/claims alerts sent, with an open rate of over 50%!
  • 56,219 contest site visitors
  • Over 38,000 video views on YouTube and Facebook
  • Over 50 videos were submitted, which we will use in future promotion of mobile app
  • GB plan member awareness of our mobile app went from 33% in 2013 to 53.3% in June 2014
  • We hit a high of 3rd Top Free Finance app in the Apple App Store (from 16th pre-contest)

My Sun Life Mobile became available in Google Play Store                  Launch date: June 22, 2014

We heard loud and clear from plan members who use Android phones that they want their own my Sun Life Mobile app: as a result, my Sun Life Mobile was added to Google Play in June. This has allowed even more plan members to find, download and use the app on the go.

Mobile drug features       Launch dates: On mobile web September 15, in Google Play, BlackBerry App World, and Apple App Store the following week

my Sun Life Mobile now provides plan members with convenient drug information, including:

  • drug coverage specific to their plan,
  • potential generic and/or therapeutic drug alternatives and cost-saving opportunities,
  • detailed information about the drug and how it works, and
  • a list of drugs claimed for the past 12 months.

Plan members will have the information they need at their fingertips, preparing them to have a conversation with their health care professional about their prescription medications. Everyone benefits from getting the best value for their drug expense, without any changes to the plan design. No other app provides this level of info!

Demo updates

We have updated our interactive my Sun Life Mobile plan member demo with our new drug feature on the sunlife.ca/mobile landing page. We’ve also created a video that walks through the experience that you can link to from your Intranet or show to your plan members. Both are also available on the Demos and Etutorials page for advisors and plan sponsors at sunlife.ca/demosandetutorials.

September 27, 2014 iOS8       

Apple launched its latest operating system, iOS8 on September 17. my Sun Life Mobile support for iOS 8 was made available on September 27, meaning any users who have downloaded the latest version on their Apple devices will be able to use my Sun Life Mobile, including the latest drug features.

December mobile release

The December mobile release includes enhancements that improve the overall user experience on my Sun Life Mobile, including access to additional tools, communications, products and services that will increase plan member engagement. These enhancements are outlined below, with more information to come in December:

Additional services section

(clients who are on exclusion lists for promotional messaging will not see this feature)

We're going mobile with the ‘my additional services’ links currently available on the mysunlife.ca plan member home page.  Where applicable, through this new menu option on the mobile app, members will be able to easily access information about other relevant and mobile-enabled services available. Note that a selection of third-party offers will be displayed on the mobile app, which are a subset of the full suite of products and services available on the ‘Additional services’ section of the plan member services website.

Usability enhancements and more tools and resources added

We are launching public features that provide plan members with even more useful information, including a suite of videos, tutorials, tools, calculators and articles to help them understand and engage in their plans. This release also includes an enhanced help section that provides answers to common questions on using my Sun Life Mobile.

Group Retirement Services lump sum contributions

Depending on plan set up, my Sun Life mobile will allow plan members with retirement savings plans to make lump sum contributions from their smartphone. The feature will walk the plan member through a few easy-to-use screens that will be customized based on the rules of their plan and what they have already set up on mysunlife.ca.
