Workplace Safety and Insurance Boards across Canada have Long Term and Short Term coverage for occupational disabilities.
Short Term Disability Benefits
If benefits are payable by Workplace Safety and Insurance for a disability resulting from workplace injuries or illnesses, Short Term Disability benefits from Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada are not normally payable.
Long Term Disability Benefits
Your employee booklet will outline whether your employer provides coverage for occupational disabilities. If your employer's LTD plan covers occupational disabilities, you can file a claim for LTD if you become disabled due to a workplace injury or illness.
Providing you satisfy the requirements of your employer's plan, income you receive from Workplace Safety and Insurance will be deducted from your LTD benefit.
If you become disabled due to a non-occupational illness and are in receipt of a permanent impairment award from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, your award will not be deducted from your LTD benefit.
