Time to update eligibility records for over-age students

Printer-friendly version

With school enrolment near, we need current records for over-age student dependents eligible to receive benefits as soon as possible in order to ensure we process their claims correctly.

What exactly is an ‘over-age student dependent’?

A dependent over the age of 21 (in most cases) can still be eligible for benefits coverage if they are:

  • A full-time student,
  • Over the age of 21 but under 25
    (26 in Quebec), and
  • Entirely dependent on the plan member.

Why is this so important?

If we don’t receive your updated information:

  • We’ll terminate coverage for dependents who reach the lower age limit under your plan if you haven’t identified them as full-time students in our system.
  • We’ll continue coverage for dependents currently identified as over-age dependents on our system until they reach the upper age limit under the plan (typically age 25; 26 in Quebec) unless you confirm that the dependent is no longer a student.

How can I submit this information?

When any of your plan members’ dependents qualify as over-age student dependents, simply send us this information the same way you normally send any plan member updates.

Plan member communication

Please share the accompanying communication with your plan members.

Proof of student status

Plan members can print coverage information for schools that require confirmation of coverage from our Plan Member Services website. Students can give the print out to their school as proof of coverage. We include directions on how to do this in the accompanying plan member communication.
