Important news about your drug plan

Printer-friendly version

We recently learned that some plan members in Nova Scotia, when filling a prescription and using their Pay-Direct Drug card are being charged more than they expected, based on the provisions of their drug plan.

You may receive questions from plan members affected by this situation. This plan member communication explains why this may have happened.

Our Pharmacy Benefit Manager, Emergis Inc., establishes contracts with pharmacies that set specific limits on how much the pharmacy will be reimbursed for drug ingredient costs and dispensing fees.

  • If a pharmacy’s price for the drug ingredient cost is higher than the set limit, the pharmacy is not allowed to pass on those extra costs to plan members.
  • If a pharmacy’s dispensing fee is higher than the set limit, the pharmacy may pass on those extra costs to plan members.

If your plan members are being charged more than they expected at the pharmacy, these extra charges are not the result of any changes that have been made by Emergis Inc. or Sun Life Financial.

We encourage plan members to talk to their pharmacists about any extra charges, as not all pharmacies charge the same amounts.

Please share the plan member communication with your plan members in Nova Scotia.
