Please note that we have recently made the following changes to the Group Critical Illness Insurance plan.

Adopting CLHIA Industry benchmark CI definitions:

The CLHIA benchmark CI definitions were developed in 2007 in an effort to grow the market by removing some of the perceived complexity around CI definitions. Attached within this link is a comparison chart outlining current versus new definitions.

All new business effective July 4, 2011 will be issued with these new definitions. For existing contracts, the definitions will be updated if the CI benefit is amended.

Adding Occupational HIV coverage to the 19 illness plan

The new 20 illness plan will replace the19 illness plan for new business. Existing contracts set up with the 19 illness plan will be updated to a 20 illness plan if the CI contract is amended.

Group CI enhancements for SunAdvantage

We are announcing the following enhancements to the Group Critical Illness Insurance plan which are available to both new business plan sponsors and existing plan sponsors upon request.

Introducing child-specific CI coverage

This benefit includes six child illnesses in addition to the adult plan’s covered conditions. The six child-specific impairments are:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Down’s syndrome

Offering age 70 termination option

Plan sponsors can now choose to extend the CI coverage termination to age 70 for both the plan member and/or spouse. The plan member and/or spouse must be enrolled in the plan prior age 65. And coverage is not portable over age 65.
