March 17, 2014

Plan sponsors may wish to consider whether this investment news has any implications for the investment options available within their plans. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada purchases units of the funds listed below, which are established as segregated funds in accordance with the Insurance Companies Act (Canada).

Effective January 1, 2014, BlackRock Asset Management (Canada) Limited (BlackRock), made minor revisions to the fund profiles for the following funds which are available through Sun Life Financial's core investment platform:

  • BlackRock Universe Bond Index
  • BlackRock LifePath® Index Target Date (9-fund series)
  • BlackRock Balanced Index Target Risk (3-fund series)

Why the change?
On October 1, 2013, FTSE TMX Global Debt Capital Markets Inc. announced that its Canadian index products would be rebranded to the FTSE TMX brand name. As a result, the Fund Profiles for the BlackRock funds updated benchmark references from DEX to FTSE TMX. Note, this is not a change in the underlying fund benchmark, but is simply a benchmark name change.

There have been no other material content changes to the most recent version of BlackRock's Fund Profiles.

BlackRock's Fund Profiles outline the investment objectives, strategies and guidelines for the investment funds managed by BlackRock. A copy of the revised fund profile document is available on the Sun Life Financial Plan Sponsor Services website at When logged into the website, under the Administration and reporting tab, select Group Retirement Services, then on the top navigation menu select Investments >Governance Reports.
