Portfolio manager changes for Sun Life MFS Global Value and Sun Life MFS International Value FundsDecember 2, 2013
Plan sponsors may wish to consider whether this investment update has any implications for the investment options available within their plan. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada purchases units of the Funds listed below which are established as segregated funds in accordance with the Insurance Companies Act (Canada).
In October 2013, MFS announced that Barnaby Wiener, Co-Portfolio Manager of Sun Life MFS Global Value Fund and Sun Life MFS International Value Fund, will be relinquishing his responsibilities as Co-PM on these funds effective December 31, 2014. This change is based on Mr. Wiener’s decision to focus his efforts on managing the MFS Prudent Wealth Strategy, in which he maintains a significant personal investment.
Mr. Wiener will be replaced by Pablo De la Mata who will be named Co-Portfolio Manager of these funds, effective September 30, 2014. Mr. De la Mata has nine years of industry experience and is currently a European research analyst with the firm. He will continue to cover health care, technology and the automotive se ctor within capital goods until the transition is complete. Mr. De la Mata is a well-respected member of the MFS investment team and was identified by both MFS and Wiener as a favoured candidate for succession due to his and Mr. Wiener’s similar outlooks and management style. Mr. De la Mata has strong familiarity with the portfolios as 13% of the MFS International Value Fund’s assets are invested in names that he covers.
MFS continues to provide long transition periods for replacing portfolio managers on their funds. The transition period is consistent with the approach used by MFS in other portfolio manager changes, providing a full year for the newly assigned co-PM to integrate into his new functions and adapt to the generalist role. The managers will continue to benefit from MFS’s global research platform. MFS expects to have a successor for Mr. De le Mata’s research responsibilities and his role as sector head for Health Care candidate in place long before the September 2014 transition.
